It’s time for the annual posting of the first flowers of the season. (Yes, this happens every year.) I discovered these crocuses in our backyard while on the phone with my mother on Friday evening. Naturally, I was so excited I lost the entire thread of our conversation in the midst of my shrieks. Now my mom informs me that my father has been referring to me as “Little Snot” in conversations with her, all because we have flowers and they do not. I will rise above such pettiness, however, and vow not let his bitterness and jealousy get the best of me. After all, when you have flowers like these in your backyard, how can you feel anything but magnanimous toward those poor souls who did not have the foresight to plant their bulbs near a south-facing wall?*
*Yes, I have deliberately chosen to ignore the fact that those who lived here before us actually planted this set of bulbs. The ones I planted are indeed still underground on two other sides of the house. It simply spreads the flower bounty over more time. Also, note the lovely crackly brown grass around the flowers. Nice contrast, don’t you think?

Ah, just joking. Southern wall or not, whatever is going on in the ground here is still buried under three feet of snow.

LOL, Lainey! Usually we have crocuses blooming as early as late-late January or very early February, so we’re actually very late this year. I was beginning to despair of spring ever arriving. Yes, I readily admit that I am quite spoiled.

Every year “something” comes up in my oversized terra cotta pots I have on my two decks of my townhome (we’re not allowed to actually plant things in the ground, plus it’s all clay under there, anyway). However, I always forget what’s in the pots, as it’s a crap shoot as to what decides to make an appearance from something I planted years ago. so, this year I decided to plant a whole bunch of daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and tulip bulbs. I’m sure I put way more in each pot than I was supposed to, but we’ll see how it goes.
I must add that for as much as I love flowers, I have a black thumb when it comes to plants. This should be interesting.

I love the photos. I need every sign of spring that I can find… I was starting to lose hope.
Um… if it’s not too personal/stalkerish a question, might I ask what part of the world you and your crocuses are in? I just bought a new house and I’m seeing green shoots starting to… well, shoot up out of the ground. Not sure if I should be feeding them or weeding them.

and would you believe that i ALSO grew up in a suburb of columbus?! worthington, specifically. what a small world! i lived there from 1992-1999. then 99-02 was in athens at OU. i’m curious to hear where you are from!

Christina, this will be our fourth year in this house, and we’re still surprised by some of the stuff that comes up! It’s kind of fun.
Merry, I was losing hope, too. This is the latest that we’ve had any signs of spring since I moved to this town almost six years ago. As for your other question, check your e-mail!

Beautiful! I really need to plant some. When I moved in to my house, there wasn’t even any grass! (It was just built). When I grew up we had those all over the place and I miss them!
